Housed in a magnificent white limestone building in East Jerusalem, the Rockefeller Archaeological Museum displays an extraordinary collection of antiquities. These excavations were mainly carried out during the British Mandate (1919-1948) in the country. The museum was opened in 1938.
The Museum has thousands of artefacts arranged in chronological order, ranging from prehistoric times to the Ottoman period. Finds include a 9,000-year-old statue from Jericho, gold jewellery from the Bronze Age and much more. Forty-eight historic black-and-white photos of archaeological sites were recently added to the permanent exhibition. The photos document the extensive work of pioneer archaeologists throughout the country in the first decades of the twentieth century.
Walking distance from Jerusalem Light Rail station Damascus Gate: 10 minutes.
